Lotus is known as Nelumbo nucifera. Beside it, there are a number of names according to its varieties and natives. Hindi name 'Kamal' is most popular in India. In Sanskrit, it is known as Saroj, Padma. Pankaj, Suriya, Ambuja, Arvind, Kunal etc. It grows in the muddy water and still its body remains unaffected and does not get wet or mild. That is why it is beleived significance of purity and spirituality. The lotus plant is cited extensively within Puranic and Vedic literature. "One who performs his duty without attachment, surrendering the results unto the Supreme Lord, is unaffected by sinful action, as the lotus is untouched by water". -Bhagavad Gita 5.10:

Hindus revere it with the divinities Vishnu and Lakshmi often portrayed on a pink lotus in iconography. Maa Saraswathi, the goddess of knowledge, art and science is portrayed on a White Lotus (Safed Kamal). In Buddhist symbolism, the lotus represents purity of the body, speech, and mind as it floating above the muddy waters of attachment and desire. According to legend, Gautama Buddha was born with the ability to walk, and lotus flowers bloomed everywhere he stepped. The international Bahá'í community adopted this symbolism in the design of the Lotus Temple in New Delhi, India. An Indian National Party "The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) uses the Lotus as its election symbol. It is also the national flower of India and Vietnam.
